Reclamation of land from Lake Pontchartrain for Development

Do you support the notion of reclaiming more land from the Lake in order to build another marina, more boathouses, commercial development and/or condominiums? Please detail why you would or would not support this and explain any vision you would have for this?

Jay Batt - I have not seen a plan for regarding such a land reclamation project, and again would welcome the opportunity to be involved with those with an interest in the area regarding the vision or development of a livable plan.

Sonia Gupta - There are a lot of environmental issues that arise when discussing the reclamation of lake land. Simply put, I have learned that reclaiming lake soil always poses a very dire risk for any establishments that might exist along such land. Furthermore, any such activity in the lake poses a threat to the already damaged eco-system and I cannot support that. And, as mentioned above, I don't support the creation of any more condominiums. As for the Marina, I believe that our existing location, once rebuilt and modernized, will continue to serve our needs. I would not, in any case, support the creation of more residential spaces in an area that has already suffered considerable environmental abuse.

Ray Landeche - Federal Tax Credits are currently available for such projects. Again, it's a big lake and I will support better development of this asset, instead of all the federal dollars going to other states.

David Nowak - Taking the example of the city of Chicago, I think any land that is reclaimable off the lake should remain a public asset, either as park or ancillary buildings. That land should serve the dual purpose of public area and storm surge reducer.

Stephen Saussy - No comment.

Candidates Shelly Stephenson Midura, Sal Palmisano & Tom Wagner did not provide an answer to this question.
